Understanding the Impact of Childhood Trauma

Research tells us that even if a traumatic event occurs at a young age, the body and mind keep the score. These adverse experiences can significantly impact child development and, without intervention, affect a person's emotional, mental, and physical well-being later in life.

Fortunately, early intervention is available. We do not have to wait for the brain to be fully developed to begin processing trauma. Many of the symptoms associated with post-traumatic stress are nonverbal and difficult for children to explain through words alone.

Signs a Child May Benefit From Trauma Therapy

Children do not always have the words to explain when they are struggling after a traumatic experience. Instead, the effects of trauma often appear through changes in emotions, behavior, relationships, or daily functioning.

Some signs that a child may benefit from trauma therapy include:

  • Anxiety, fearfulness, or excessive worry

  • Sleep difficulties or frequent nightmares

  • Emotional outbursts or increased irritability

  • Withdrawal from family, friends, or favorite activities

  • Increased clinginess or separation anxiety

  • Difficulty concentrating at school

  • Sudden changes in behavior or mood

  • Physical complaints such as headaches or stomachaches without a clear medical cause

While these reactions can be a normal response to stressful events, ongoing difficulties may indicate that additional support is needed. Trauma therapy can help children healthily process their experiences, develop effective coping skills, and regain a greater sense of safety, confidence, and emotional well-being.

Play Therapy for Childhood Trauma

Using play therapy, children can show a therapist their struggles, fears, and responses to traumatic experiences through toys and symbolic play. Toys serve as representations of the child's inner world, allowing them to explore difficult experiences in a way that feels safe and less overwhelming.

Play therapy allows children to externalize their story, where it can be better understood and therapeutically processed. As children work through traumatic experiences, they can develop a greater sense of mastery, confidence, and control. This empowerment is especially important following trauma, which often leaves children feeling vulnerable, helpless, or disconnected from their sense of safety.

How Play Therapy Helps Children Process Trauma

Play therapy allows the child to lead the therapist through their story in a non-directed manner. The therapist follows the child's process by reflecting, reframing, and helping them make sense of the emotions, experiences, and themes being expressed through play.

“Play is the most natural method of self healing that childhood affords.” -Erik Erikson

Benefits of Trauma Therapy for Children

Trauma therapy helps children move beyond simply coping with difficult experiences and toward meaningful healing and growth. As children process traumatic events in a safe and supportive environment, they often develop stronger emotional regulation skills and a greater sense of self-confidence.

Therapy can help reduce anxiety, improve behavior, strengthen relationships, and support healthier responses to stress. Children also learn that their emotions are manageable and that they can navigate challenges without becoming overwhelmed.

Over time, many children experience improved functioning at home, school, and in social settings. By addressing the impact of trauma early, therapy can help create a foundation for long-term resilience, emotional well-being, and healthy development.

Instinctual Trauma Response Therapy (ITR) for Trauma Recovery

For children who are more verbally expressive and willing to discuss their adverse experiences, a short-term intensive approach called Instinctual Trauma Response Therapy (ITR)® may be appropriate.

While every traumatic experience is unique, the human body's response to trauma follows predictable patterns. Whether a person experiences a car accident, medical trauma, physical assault, natural disaster, or another distressing event, common trauma responses often include:

  • Startle response

  • Attempts to fight or flee

  • Feelings of being trapped

  • Freeze responses

  • Altered states of consciousness

  • Submission

  • Self-repair and recovery

Understanding these natural trauma responses helps children and families recognize that many post-traumatic reactions are rooted in the body's instinctive survival system, creating a foundation for healing and recovery through ITR.

Processing Traumatic Experiences Through ITR

In ITR, the traumatic experience is drawn out in a graphic narrative, or what I often describe as a slow-motion "movie" of what happened. Using the stages of trauma response, children can view their experience from a safe distance while organizing it into a story with a beginning, middle, and end.

Like trauma-focused play therapy, this process externalizes the experience and allows the child to become a witness to what occurred rather than feeling trapped within it. Through drawings and verbal retellings, the brain's right and left hemispheres become more integrated, supporting healthy trauma processing without avoidance or emotional overwhelm.

Parent Support During Trauma Recovery

Healing from trauma extends beyond the therapy room. At Play Heal Grow Counseling, parents and caregivers are valued partners in the healing process. Through education, support, and practical strategies, families gain a deeper understanding of how trauma affects a child's emotions, behaviors, and nervous system.

Parents learn ways to support emotional regulation, strengthen connection, and respond to challenges with confidence and compassion. When caregivers feel empowered and supported, children are better able to experience safety, trust, and lasting emotional growth.
